Field types reference

Every type a custom field can have, and which to pick for a given piece of information.

Rami Magdi·29 septembre 2026

A field's type decides what can be entered, how it's displayed, and — more importantly — what you can do with it afterwards in filters, routing rules and automations.

Text

  • Text — a single line. For short identifiers: an order number, a licence key, an account reference.

  • Text area — several lines of plain text, for notes and descriptions.

  • Rich text — formatted text with headings, lists and links, for anything that needs structure.

Choices

  • Select — one option from a list you define.

  • Multiple select — several options at once.

  • Yes/No — a single switch, for something that's simply true or false.

These are the types worth reaching for. Anything with a known set of answers is far more useful as a select than as text — you can filter it, route on it, count it in reports, and it can't be misspelt.

Numbers, dates and times

  • Number — for anything you'd compare or add up: an amount, a quantity, a version.

  • Date — a calendar date, such as a deadline or a purchase date.

  • Time — a time of day, for appointments and windows.

Use number rather than text for anything numeric. "Greater than 500" only works on a number field; on text it compares character by character and gives you nonsense.

Contact details and files

  • Email and Phone — validated as what they are, and rendered so they can be used directly rather than copied out.

  • Upload — a file attached to the ticket, for receipts, logs and screenshots that belong to a field rather than to the conversation.

Choosing

Work backwards from what you'll do with it. If you want to filter, route or count on a field, it needs a type that supports comparison — select, number, date, yes/no. If it's only ever read by a person, text is fine.

Getting this right at the start saves the awkward migration later, when a text field holding "high", "High" and "very high" has to become the select it should always have been.
